Characteristics of Joshua

Reading Portion: Joshua ch 5 :13 to 15

Joshua can be viewed in three angles:

  • Young man
  • Middle aged man
  • Old man

As a young man he always wanted to flee from idolatry, which is evident from Exodus chapter 32 and 33. In chapter 32 he was with Moses on the mountain too thus fleeing from the idolatry, which was there in the Israel camp. In chapter 33 vs 11 we see that he did not depart from the tabernacle. The tabernacle was pitched outside camp and thus he was far from idolatry.

In Joshua ch 5 vs 13 to 15 we can see Joshua as a middle-aged man

Two things in this portion are:

  • Revelation of God
  • Response of Joshua to the Revelation he saw

Response of Joshua to the Revelation he saw

  • Joshua acknowledged the presence of the Lord
  • Joshua fell on his face and worshipped the Lord
  • Joshua submitted himself to the Lord
  • Joshua was obedient to the Lord. He removed his shoes when he was instructed to do so.

In vs 15 we see the Holiness of our Lord. We are to keep our walk away from the defilement of sin. Be Holy as He is holy

Revelation of God

  • Our Lord is a man of war (Exodus ch 15:3). On the Calvary he defeated all His foes.
  • A divine title can be seen in vs 14 - Captain of the host of the Lord
  • Another title He has is Prince of Life (Acts ch 3:15)
We have a captain who can lead us in our battle and fight for us.
